Minerva Veterans Park
Due to the efforts of many
individuals, the military hardware shown
is now located in the Minerva Veterans
Park. From locating the equipment,
transporting the equipment, restoring the
equipment, and preparing the concrete pads
for displaying the equipment, Legionnaires
and VFW members of Minerva and Carrollton
worked as teams to refurbish the displays
and make them a proud addition to the
Minerva community.

District 10 efforts
to aid veterans in need
|
|
Sam Jackson, 1st Vice Commander of Ohio
District 10, and Gary Ickes, District
Finance Officer, have developed a new
program for veterans in financial need in
the District. Ickes is also a service
officer for the Stark County Veterans
Commission. He and Jackson were exploring
ways that the 10th District could help
needy veterans. It was noted that each
county commission has certain rules that
must be followed in order for a veteran or
their family to qualify for financial help
through the commission, on a short term,
temporary basis.
In Stark County, a needy veteran must
be a resident of Stark County for a
minimum of 90 days in order to qualify,
among other requirements. Therefore, when
a veteran moves into a NEW County, such as
Stark, the veteran would NOT eligible,
although meeting all OTHER criteria. Up
until now, these veterans in Stark County
would have to be "referred" to "other
sources" for aid. At the 10th District
conference on Jan. 6, 2008, the District
Finance Committee and, later, the entire
assembly voted to approve the proposed
program.
All nine counties in District 10 may
refer a screened and needy Veteran, as
described above, through their particular
County's Service Commission, that would
then process a request and submit all of
the information to Gary Ickes in Stark
County, certifying that no other help was
available. Ickes was authorized as the
Liaison for the 10th District and would
determine a nominal amount within specific
guidelines, and forward a District check
to the requesting county's service officer
for that particular Veteran, only. The
funds for this project would come from the
District's charitable account. Some cases
where a larger need was established, would
be discussed and agreed upon via
teleconference with the officers of the
District, before issuing a check.
