Army general awards WWII
medals
What began as a quest in December 2008
concluded in an emotional celebration for
88-year-old former PFC Donald Knapp as he
received medals, including the Bronze
Star, for his military service in World
War II. The ceremony, a surprise to Don,
took place at a family reunion in August.
His daughter Lorri Murphy and grandson
Jared researched his record, lost in the
1973 St. Louis fire, submitted the
information to the Army for correction of
his military records, and with an assist
from Senator Voinovich's office was able
to make the surprise presentation.
Brigadier General Jack Lee, Commander of
the 73rd Troop Command represented the
Army at the ceremony. Although previously
awarded, Brigadier General Lee expressed
his personal desire to pin the Combat
Infantryman's Badge on Don and presented
him with his personal Coin of
Excellence.
