Iraq War POW leads Post 39 parade

Drew Webster Post 39 in Pomeroy hosted the first Meigs County Veterans Appreciation Day on the second Saturday of September. Post member Bill Spaun chaired the event. The day's events were well received by the people of Pomeroy and surrounding communities. A large parade with marching bands and the Parade Grand Marshall Jessica Lynch, an Iraq War POW from West Virginia who spoke of her experiences in Iraq. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Jennifer Menchini Kirby, a native of Pomeroy, presented a Flag that had flown in Iraq to Post 39. Two Air Force F-16s conducted a Flyover of the Ceremony.


Post 27 Pearl Harbor veteran honored


Commander Larry Kemper (seated) of Post 27 in Gallipolis, is presenting Ray Boone a certificate of appreciation and announcing that Post 27 is naming the Post's Pearl Harbor dinners after Ray Boone. From now on, the annual Pearl Harbor Dinner on December 7th will be known as "The Ray Boone Pearl Harbor Dinner." As Ray was telling us after the award ceremony, "At 8:05 in the morning, on December 7th he was awakened to bombs going off.... He came up from his spaces aboard ship to see destruction all around him." Ray Boone is the only person at the Post who was actually at the bombing of Pearl Harbor.


Play ball...thanks to Post 27

American Legion Post 27 in Gallipolis donated $1,500.00 towards American Legion Baseball programs in Gallia County. Pictured at left is Tom Abrahamson, Liaison Officer from Post 27 for American Legion Baseball. Tom is also SAL Squadron 27 Adjutant and Finance Officer. In the middle is Marvin Poulins, American Legion Baseball assistant coach, financial advisor and business agent. On the right is Larry Kemper, Post 27 Commander. The SAL donated $500.00 for the American Legion Junior Baseball team in Gallia County. The American Legion donated $1000.00 for the American Legion Team in Gallia County. The American Legion has sponsored American Legion baseball teams for well over 10 years.


Lending schools a hand in Gallia County

Tom Abrahamson of American Legion LaFayette Post 27 in Gallipolis presents the Post's American Legion Scholarship information to Mrs. Nancy Vaughn. The posts sponsors two $500 scholarships for local students. Nancy Vaughn is the Gallia Academy's guidance department supervisor. The Post is doing a lot of things with the local schools. In addition to sponsoring the two scholarships, Post 27 is working with the students in K - 6 on our Americanism program, on Veterans Day the Post goes to the schools in Gallia County and tells some of the first hand experiences our members have had in the various wars. Last but not least they sponsor a dinner for the teachers in the county showing our appreciation to them for working our Americanism campaign into the curriculum for the various schools we attend.
